Technology
Silixa’s key enabling technology is its Intelligent Distributed Acoustic Sensor (IDAS). This
allows the operator to listen to the acoustic field at every point along an
optical fibre cable. It is like having a microphone at every point along the
fibre, each recording digital-quality sound.
Unlike distributed disturbance sensors (which are sometimes confusingly also
described as “acoustic” sensors), which can detect an event at a point along the
fibre, but not record true sound, Silixa’s IDAS collects the true acoustic signal
at all points along the fibre. This opens up many amazing new measurement
possibilities…
This, though, is just the beginning. The raw acoustic data can be used to derive
many parameters which are usually unmeasureable, such as providing distributed
flow and leak detection measurements. More amazingly, the fibre can be arranged
as a massive acoustic camera to allow acoustic imaging with unprecedented field
of view and resolution.
