Software Engineer/Senior Software Engineer

The Role

Silixa, the leading developer of the next generation of optical fibre sensors, is rapidly expanding its business and we are looking for a Software Engineer to join the team. The position will be based in the UK.

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you will be responsible for the ongoing development of hardware control, processing and communications software to support Silixa’s products.

The role will involve definition design requirements and specifications through to implementation, testing and validation of designs and delivery of documentation to support the design.

As part of this role you will be required to support the successful transfer of new software from development to release in a timely, efficient and cost effective manner. You will also be responsible for providing the necessary support to field staff to allow them to adopt new software in the field, and you may be required to support field installations of new software where necessary. Your role will also involve maintaining systems by monitoring and correcting software defects.

You will also be responsible for ensuring that code is developed to Silixa’s quality standards and that change control systems are maintained.

You will be expected to be actively involved in proposing and developing Silixa’s ongoing software strategy in consultation with other members of the technology team.

The Candidate

  • • Detailed knowledge of a structured language such as C, C++ or Fortran and, preferably, a working knowledge (or better) of LabVIEW
  • • Proven record of ability to manage time and work to deadlines
  • • Excellent software documentation skills, including use of source code control systems
  • • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • • Excellent team working skills
  • • Working knowledge of Java, HDML or SQL would be an advantage
  • • Experience in working with embedded systems and remote control/communications would be an advantage

Qualifications

A good degree in a technical subject such as Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or Physics

The Company

Silixa is developing the next generation of optical fibre sensors, which can simply listen to the acoustic signal at every point along many kilometres of standard telecoms optical fibre. Unlike point sensors, Silixa’s Distributed Acoustic Sensor (IDAS) has no bulky, expensive components and, since the sensing element is standard fibre, can be deployed cost-effectively and flexibly in remote, hostile environments.

The IDAS technology utilises cutting-edge, high-speed optoelectronics and signal processing technology to enable a large stream of acoustic data at every location to be recorded and processed in real-time. This revolutionary technology provides the foundation for advancing the frontiers of acoustic sensing and imaging, leading to many new industrial and scientific applications.
